Red Sox and Pitching in 2009

The Padres and Cubs couldn't get a deal done for Jake Peavey. C'mon Theo, get out there and make an offer to the Padres for the guy and make this year the year of the Red Sox pitcher. Adding Peavey to the staff that's in place would just about guarantee getting back into thye World Series in 2009. An offer of Bucholz or Bowden or Ellsbury should make the deal palatable to Towers. Might have to add another young position player, but you should be able to get this done.

You could save youirself and the team $175M too because while the desire for Tex is there, the need isn't. That's the difference, need vs want. If you want another World Championship, get the arm. If the deal costs you Ellsbury, then there are outfielders aplenty out there starting with a big OBP guy named Abreu. Or Adam Dunn. Pittsburgh and Florida are always willing to deal and usually they don't ask for the sky.

Let Tex go and concentrate on what's needed, not what you crave.

About Red Sox and Pitching
I don't think the Red Sox need Tex. What they need is to solidify the starting rotation. If I were the GM, I'd be calling the Padres and making them feel lucky that the Cubs backed out of the Peavey deal. and that I had a better one. I'd deal one of the kids for Peavey..Bucholz or Bowden or if necessary, Ellsbury. If Ellsbury was the player I had to deal, I'd be out getting Abreu or Adam Dunn. If I got Peavey to go with the present staff, I really wouldn't need to spend for Tex. I'd also tell Ortiz that if he didn't lose 30 lbs by spring camp, to stay home and I'd either buy him out or deal him. His bat slowed down in 2008 because he gained weight and he no one is sure if he's really 32 or he's 36 or 38.I'd prefer to keep Lowell at 3rd and Youk at 1st. I missed the World Series by one game.....I think Peavey could get me beyond that in 2009.
